Diabetic in a Sweet World

I am an insulin dependent type 1 diabetic. I am considered extremely brittle. I use an insulin pump with a 24 hour sensor feature. Most diabetics in my situation have problems controlling their blood sugars. Since going on pump therapy my A1C's have come down significantly. I highly recommend pump therapy for people who are type 1 diabetics.
Another problem I have had as a diabetic is how to traditionally celebrate holidays including the foods which make the holidays memorable and still are "legal" for a diabetic. This last holiday season was filled with many traditional sweets used in our family without being "illegal". We had candied sweet potatoes, fruit cake, pineapple pudding, pineapple upside down cake, and pumpkin pie. Yes, it is possible to enjoy all of these "sweets" without causing your blood sugar to go nuts! Of course, you can't gorge yourself on them. Watch those serving sizes!
I sweeten with apple juice concentrate and applesauce. I don't use candied fruit in the fruit cake. I use dried fruits and lots of nuts. When I do use a sweetener it is Sucanat, a complex carbohydrate and I use it sparingly. Just note that it makes everything brown.
I will provide my recipes in my next blog.
